Abstract

The Air Dingin Landfill in Padang has the potential to pollute the surrounding environment through leachate containing hazardous substances, including lead (Pb) derived from electronic waste. This contamination poses a risk to the quality of community well water. This study aimed to describe the concentration of lead (Pb) in well water surrounding the Air Dingin Landfill in Padang City. A quantitative approach with a descriptive study design was employed. A total of 107 well water samples were collected from locations within 0–500 meters of the landfill using purposive sampling. Lead (Pb) concentrations were analyzed using standard laboratory methods in accordance with SNI 6989.46:2009 and compared with the water quality standard established by the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023 (0.01 mg/L). The distribution of Pb concentrations was analyzed using univariate analysis, while differences in Pb concentrations between the Exposed Area (EA) and Non-Exposed Area (NEA) were assessed using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that Pb concentrations in the EA were significantly higher than those in the NEA (p < 0.001), with an average Pb concentration of 0.198 mg/L in the EA. This significant difference indicates that proximity to the landfill is an important factor influencing elevated Pb concentrations in well water. The findings suggest that well water surrounding the Air Dingin Landfill is contaminated with lead (Pb), likely due to leachate infiltration. Therefore, regular water quality monitoring and effective management strategies are needed to protect public health and prevent further environmental contamination.
