Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the association between family member smoking habits and the incidence of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) among children under five aged 12–59 months in West Sumatra Province. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI). The sample amounted to 1677 children under five who were selected from a total sampling from the population that met the criteria for complete data inclusion A total of 1,677 children were selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate chi-square tests. The prevalence of ARI children under five in West Sumatra is 37.8% and as many as 36.6% of families have at least one family member who smokes. No statistically significant association was found between family member smoking habits and ARI incidence (p-value = 0.20; POR = 1.22; 95% CI: 0.93–1.61). Family members' smoking habits were not significantly related to the incidence of ISPA in toddlers, allegedly due to reporting bias (social desirability bias) and spatial factors of smoking outside the home. Interventions to prevent ISPA in West Sumatra must focus on controlling indoor air pollution.
